Learning that there is a legal possibility of some stranger, a “professional guardian” taking control of your life as you grow older is decidedly scary.[1] Anyone can initiate a court action wherein you will be tested for mental competency by people you do not know, and who, as we saw in the trials surrounding Mrs. Terri Schiavo, come to questionable results. Then control over your life is taken away from you, and you are at the mercy of your “guardian.” Does that make you feel all warm inside? It scares me.

This is disturbing. I can only imagine insurance companies requiring this. I can only imagine someone getting the bright idea to install an equivalent of the airplane’s “black box” to see if the accident was your fault. Is this the way we want to live? I am all for saving lives and preventing car accidents, but I wonder if this is the best way to do that.

Via Mrs. Michelle Malkin,[1] my attention was directed at an essay by Mr. Bill Whittle.[2] This essay, though laced with some objectionable language, does a very good job at going beyond race, beyond political parties, to look at (a simplified version of) the realities of people. In doing so, he looks at why some people make good leaders in times of trouble and others poor ones. And in doing so, he explains some of how the disaster that is New Orleans came to be. It is well worth reading.
